The excellent !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! posted this pretty unusual Porsche: A early 996 with a 5.7L LS1 for 25k $. Porsche purist will hate, but that doesn't matter as they would hate every 996 anyways.
Apparently there is something like a conversion kit being used for the build, strangley the car has no power steering or A/C. I thought that the reason to buy a conversion kit is to have a all working, problem free car?

The rest of the car looks fine, pretty much as good as 996 C2s can get. So what does the holy Opponation think, NP or CP?

[I would really like to post a poll, but I have no idea how to do that. A tutorial would be greatly appreciated.]

I wouldn't buy it for that price. But I still think it's awesome.

LS truly is the answer to every question.

Imagine how confused Corvetter owners would be when you rev the engine at a traffic light and it sounds just like theirs.

Sounds like murder in an aluminum package. I like it.

This was posted here a while back, by someone who knows the owner. I'm surprised it's still for sale. Personally, I'm all for heresymobiles.

quick question, how the hell did they fit a 5.7L V8 in to the back of a 911?!
if they put it up front, it would be godly!

A front-engined 911 would be the highest form of automotive heresy.

Awesome, but the problem is, it's being sold in California, and the probability of that thing ever clearing smog rules is probably .0003%. So it could never be daily driven unless it's taken elsewhere.

no, a watercooled, british engine in the front of an FWD converted 1960's beetle convertible painted in the colors of the US flag is ultimate automotive heresy, but that is a second close

Too bad the Cayman engine department seems a bit small to fit a Chevy LS without making a ton of mods to the car:

http://ls1tech.com/forums/convers…

They Chevy engine would make the Cayman a beast and fix the issue of Porsche not selling a Cayman with the 3.8L engine from the Carrera S.

Why would it have problems clearing smog? If it's kept stock then it should produce the same amount of smog as a standard LS engine.

I love this. I probably wouldn't pay $25k for it and I wish it still had A/C but I love it nonetheless. This is why pushrod engines are still awesome, they're so compact, light and power dense.

Because California is bat shit nuts. I went through hell trying to smog my 2000 Ford Expedition after I put a supercharger on it. And that wasn't anything close to the complexity of an engine swap.

Basically, when you go to smog a Porsche, the smog tech plugs in Porsche into his computer. The computer then sets acceptable levels of pollution based on what the Porsche engine should produce. So when there's an LS in the Porsche, there are a bunch of emission parameters that change, and thus, it would "fail" smog. And in CA, the rules on engine swaps is that the engine swapped in needs to be from the same brand and be the same model year or newer.

I'm sure it could be done (maybe), but not without a lot of headaches and a whole bunch of effort.

Nice price. I'd love a LSx motor in my 996 should the M96 ever go out. Unfortunately, I lack the skills to pull off such a swap.

I followed the build for this very closely, they guy did most of his own work in his garage. I think there might be some odds and ends to follow up of given the condition of the car before the swap. I would say NP.

Also, the funny thing about this swap was the M96 was in prefect working condition when the car was bought, he sold the motor to fund the V-8 swap.
